How Does NASA Practice Landing on the Moon? - Smarter Every Day 252

After seeing how anime studio Madhouse knocked season 2 of Mob Psycho 100 right out of the

park, I, along with most, was pretty stoked to see what they would do with everyone’s

favorite OP superhero, Saitama.Or as he’s known in Season 2, Bald Cape.

But somewhere between the middling Episode 1 and where we are now, I came to the conclusion

that One-Punch Man just flat out isn’t delivering in its second outing.

Sure, the animation quality has taken an unfortunate hit, but there are still some good fight scenes

But ultimately, where Season 2 fails is exactly what made Season 1 such a success: its adherence

Now before you nuke this video to oblivion, I’m not saying that Season 1 wasn’t a

But for all One-Punch Man’s riffing on series like Dragon Ball Z and Naruto, Season 1 remained

sharp because it still followed a basic shonen formula.

So join me for this Wisecrack Edition on One-Punch Man Season 2: What Went Wrong?

Alright guys, a quick recap of what’s going on with our bald crusader is in order.

Saitama lives in a world populated by heroes and monsters.

After being royally rejected for an entry level job, Saitama stumbles upon this deeply

unfortunate-looking child who Sharpied nipples on this equally unfortunate-looking monster.

Remembering how he once wanted to be a hero, Saitama decides to protect our ugly youth

Three years of training later and the results are clear: .

But with all this power comes immense boredom.

Whether it’s training his new disciple, Genos, or climbing up the ranks of the Hero

Association, or even defeating a world-ending threat like Boros, Saitama’s sheer strength

As such, a lot of Saitama’s problems in the show don’t revolve around getting stronger,

And, this is where One-Punch Man leverages a lot of its humor.

For example, while every character and their mom loves to monologue on their novel origin

story, Saitama’s insane strength comes from a mediocre exercise routine of 100 push-ups,

100 sit ups, 100 squats… you know the drill.

In moments like these, the show parodies the traditional Shonen trope of heroes and villains

one-upping each other through a constant slew of new powers, like Goku going Super Saiyan,

or Sasuke gaining the Mangekyou Sharingan, or, whatever they do in Bleach.

Instead, Saitama’s battles often end in an anti-climax.

We’re not watching All Might or Deku overcome their weakness and deliver a devastating finishing

Instead we’re watching Saitama freak out midfight about a bargain sale at the local

super market And, even without a gag, it always ends with

Season 2 largely continues this trend with a few new plot elements.

Saitama is still climbing the ranks of the Hero Association, but with the self-proclaimed

hero hunter, Garo, on the loose, Saitama has entered a martial arts competition to learn

Never mind the fact that Saitama does exactly that here … and here . All the while, a

newly minted Monsters Association is trying to create a world where their king, Orochi,

reigns supreme, creating absolute chaos in the process.

So if Season 2 has all the same trappings of Season 1 along with a new cast of enemies,

To answer that, we’re going to have to look at what makes the shonen genre tick.

As the history of anime will show, overpowered protagonists are nothing new.

Just look at the breakout hit this year, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, which

focuses on a salary man who dies only to be reborn in a fantasy world as a super stacked

Seriously, this thing can absorb any monster and gain their power, which is the definition

But when your hero is already the world’s strongest, you have yourself a problem.

After all, if your hero can already beat the big baddie from the get go, then how do you

The answer for shonen, at least lies in a three part formula for plot: pacing +

Did you ever wonder why it took so many episodes for Goku to get involved on Planet Namek?

Sure, he was busy training at 100 times Earth’s gravity so he could take on Frieza, but there’s

another, much simpler reason: to build tension.

See, for our overpowered heroes, there’s little doubt in the audience’s mind that

they can beat the villain from the start, but that would make for some very quick and

As such, shows need a way to delay the hero’s entry usually through a combination of

clever pacing and what I like to call asymmetric information.

Asymmetric Information refers to information that the audience, and oftentimes other characters,

So while Goku conveniently literally spends 19 episodes hurtling through space, blissfully

unaware of what’s happening on Namek, the audience is slowly growing more anxious as

it watches Krillin and Gohan gather the dragonballs and brush ever closer to Frieza.

But in delaying your main hero’s arrival, you’re arguably putting your main plotline

As a consequence, shows have to really drum up their B and C stories more commonly

known as side plots in order to compensate.

Basically if your main hero’s not doing anything, then the rest of the cast needs

In doing so, these B and C stories will keep help drive the overall narrative forward,

letting the hero swoop in at the last minute and bring the main plotline to a close.

Keeping with our DBZ example, we spend most of our time on Namek following two groups:

Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma in one group, and Vegeta in another.

These two groups make up our B and C plots, respectively.

Gohan and co. are looking for the Dragon Balls to revive their dead friends, while simultaneously

trying to save the last of the Namek people from Frieza’s ruthless slaughter.

Vegeta on the other hand is searching for the Dragon Balls to receive immortality, thereby

guaranteeing that he can kill Frieza the guy who destroyed his planet.

And it’s no coincidence that where these two plotlines come to a point is also when

Under attack by Frieza’s elite mercenary brigade, the two groups form an uneasy alliance

 agreeing to use one wish to make Vegeta immortal, and the other two to revive Gohan’s
