It was common knowledge in early modern England that sexual desire was malleable, and could be increased or decreased by a range of foods - including artichokes, oysters and parsnips. This book argues that these aphrodisiacs were used not simply for sexual pleasure, but, more importantly, to enhance fertility and reproductive success; and that at that time sexual desire and pleasure were felt to be far more intimately connected to conception and fertility than is the case today. It draws on a range of sources to show how, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, aphrodisiacs were recommended for the treatment of infertility, and how men and women utilised them to regulate their fertility. Via themes such as gender, witchcraft and domestic medical practice, it shows that aphrodisiacs were more than just sexual curiosities - they were medicines which operated in a number of different ways unfamiliar now, and their use illuminates popular understandings of sex and reproduction in this period. Dr Jennifer Evans is a Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Hertfordshire.

There, she and her anxious, supposedly unlikeable

new friend Barbara study a seemingly worthless stone

Diana that her dead boo Steve was still alive,

and Barbara that she was more like Diana.

but the stone is stolen by badman Max Gold,

who basically wishes for a thousand wishes.

 I wish to be you, the Dream Stone itself.

Diana loses her powers, Barbara her humanity,

and Max the moist air entering his nostrils.

Then Max goes full Oprah on wish granting

Now, lots of people have their various reasons

But we think one of the best ways to look

at the film's flaws is through its central narrative engine.

 Now, it doesn't take a Film Studies degree

It's pretty clearly telegraphed in the opening flashback,

which sees a young Diana try to win an Amazonian race

That is the only truth and truth is all there is.

to view the greed-is-good mentality of the 1980s

 Do you have everything you've ever wanted?

Aren't you tired of always wishing you had more?

Cheating your way into wealth is just as bad

and it's up to Diana to set the record straight.

 This world was a beautiful place just as it was.

 Now for many at Wisecrack, this moment felt a little dumb.
