What makes a successful CEO? Most people call to mind a familiar definition: “a seasoned manager with deep industry expertise.” Others might point to the qualities of today’s so-called celebrity CEOs—charisma, virtuoso communication skills, and a confident management style. But what really matters when you run an organization? What is the hallmark of exceptional CEO performance? Quite simply, it is the returns for the shareholders of that company over the long term.

1934 Edsel Ford Model 40 Special Speedster
The speedster was designed by Ford Motor Company’s styling chief, Bob Gregorie, specifically for Edsel Ford -- who was the President of Ford Motor Company and the son of Ford Motor Company founder, Henry Ford. This was a radical design for that era. Most cars of the 1930s were "boxy" compared to the sleek lines of Edsel's dream car. As you might have guessed, a scale-model of the Speedster was tested in a small wind tunnel, and the bodywork was not only streamlined, but it was also lightweight and very strong, similar to aircraft of the era.

1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt
This car was revealed to the public at the 1940 New York Auto Show, and Chrysler touted it as “The Car of the Future." It was specifically built to educate the public about aerodynamics and streamlining. The Thunderbolt was promoted as having been tested in a wind tunnel to provide scientific studies of how the car’s shape dealt with continuous airflow, and how that information led to refinements that minimized resistance.

1955 Chrysler Streamline X -- also known as "Gilda”
This was Ben's favorite car at the exhibit. The Ghia-built Chrysler Streamline X debuted at the 1955 Turin automobile show, where it was hailed as "shaped by the wind," and it caused a sensation with its "experimental body." As you can clearly see, the Streamline X design was heavily influenced by jet aircraft and rocketry in the postwar era. So how was it "shaped by the wind?" Well, a one-fifth-scale plasticine model of the car was made for wind tunnel testing at the Polytechnic University of Turin, in Italy. The end result illustrates a combination of scientific aerodynamics and the aesthetics and styling of streamlining.

1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero - AND - Ferrari 512 S Modulo
At the time, automobile designers and makers were engaged in an ongoing battle to produce the ultimate wedge-shaped car. Both of these cars have a radically low stance at just 33 inches tall for the Lancia, and 37 inches for the Ferrari. And while these two wedge-shaped Italian cars may cut through the wind with ease, they were both so low, and the driver visibility was so poor, the outlandish designs never made it to production.

And that's just a few examples of what we saw at the exhibit. Yes, the designs are radically different across the various manufacturers and spanning the decades, but they all have one thing in common -- they were all trying to cheat the wind.

It might be easy to design a car body that appears aerodynamic; however, to really fine-tune that design, to know that you're getting the most out of it and to make it truly slippery, you need to test it in a wind tunnel -- just like automakers have been doing for the past 90 years.
