Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a celebrated installment in  writer/director Quentin Tarintino's ouvre. So when he came out with a book adaptaion of the story, we were first in line to read it. But was the book markedly different from the film, and do those differences mean something big? Food is arguably the best thing about being alive. No other bodily pleasure is enjoyed multiple times every day and never gets old. It is an expression of culture, our parents' love and a means of celebration or comfort. That’s why it hits a special nerve when we are told we should change what and how we eat to fight rapid climate change. One of the most delicious foods, meat, gets the worst press. It doesn’t help that the topic is really hard to properly research yourself and debates get emotional quickly. But clearly science can give us an answer! 

The reality is, well, it’s complicated. Let’s take a look at three climate arguments against meat that are used a lot and see what happens.

What's up guys, Michael here with our latest

Which in the director's classic nonlinear fashion,

long before the book reached your nightstand.

Drawing from a long history of movie novelizations

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood gave us a chance to revisit

But is this book just a simple transcription

or did Tarantino have more ambitious plans?

And of course, spoilers ahead for both the book

As always, let's start by taking a glance

Both versions of once upon a time in Hollywood

are mostly quiet, ruminative, nostalgia pieces

The TV shows and movies within the movie concede

Tarantino basically treats the Lancer TV show sequences

as it might've been told in the Western dime novels

Beyond that, the book basically has the same story,

There are some occasional shifts in perspective,

but the characters' journeys are relatively unchanged

Tarantino even references some of the same songs

Difference #1: Cliff's a real jerk in the book.

In the movie, Brad Pitt's stunt man character,

cliff Booth, seems equal parts Zen and Zuora.

He's a war hero with a still water's demeanor

who we know can handle himself in a fight

He has a devil-may-care attitude and is more than happy

to spend his days taking punches for his best bud,

 Is that how you described your job Cliff?

he's hounded by rumors that he murdered his wife

and seems humbled by his near brush with the prison system.

 Prison try to get me all my life, they ain't got me yet.

The day it does, it won't be because of you.

 Guilty or not, Cliff seems to see the death of his wife

A second, and perhaps undeserved, chance at life.

He seems like someone who doesn't take his freedom

for granted and has a sincere appreciation

He doesn't seem chastened to the same degree

that cliff did intentionally kill his wife Billie,

a laundry list of qualifying factors and semi-excuses.

What's more, this isn't the only straight up murder

despite offering a very flimsy explanation to the cops,

got away with killing a couple of seedy Italian mafiosos

Cliff can take some time to taunt the unarmed men

with war stories about how many Italians he killed

to earn his medal of valor, before putting a bullet

For the day I got that, pointing at the medal of valor,

I killed at least seven, maybe as many as nine,

When I was in Sicily I killed Italians every day.

While he's far less cavalier about murdering his wife,

This all kind of undercuts the depth that Brad Pitt brought

Overall, cliff really doesn't seem especially complicated

Frankly, he often just seems like a lunatic.
